Hummus, falafel, tabbouleh, warm bread and meat off a vertical spit. It is the food of the eastern Mediterranean — Syria, Lebanon, Jordan, Palestine — cooked the way it is cooked at home, on E Campbell Road.

“Mediterranean” on an American menu usually means one of two things: Greek, or Levantine. We are the second one. Same sea, different corner — and the difference shows up in the spice rack.

Greek cooking leans on oregano, dill and lemon. Ours leans on cumin, coriander, cardamom, garlic and sumac. If you have had a gyro and expected shawarma, or the other way round, that is the gap you tasted.

Start with the mezze

Mezze is not an appetiser course, it is the meal. A table of small plates that everyone reaches into: hummus whipped with tahini and olive oil, baba ganoush made from eggplant charred until the skin splits, tabbouleh that is mostly parsley and not mostly bulgur, and falafel fried to order so the outside cracks.

Then the spit

The two vertical rotisseries in the window are the loud part of the kitchen. Chicken on one, beef on the other, both marinated overnight and shaved off in thin layers as they roast — never scooped out of a tray.

In a wrap it is a shawarma sandwich; over rice with salad and sauce it is a plate. The rotisserie chicken is a separate bird entirely, cooked whole and sold by the half or the whole.

All of it is halal

Feeding more than a table

The same food scales. A catering tray serves 10 to 12 and mixes mezze with shawarma or rotisserie chicken — it works out around $8 to $10 a head.

Is Mediterranean food the same as Middle Eastern food?

They overlap. The eastern Mediterranean — Syria, Lebanon, Jordan, Palestine — is both at once, and that is what we cook. Greek and Italian food is Mediterranean but not Middle Eastern; Persian and Gulf food is Middle Eastern but not Mediterranean.

What should I order the first time?

Hummus and falafel to share, then a chicken shawarma wrap at $9.99. That is the whole idea of the cuisine in two courses, and it is under $20 for one person.

Is the Mediterranean food here halal?

All of it. The entire kitchen is halal — no pork, no alcohol, one supply chain, no separate menu.

Do you have vegetarian Mediterranean options?

Yes, and more than most. Falafel, hummus, baba ganoush, tabbouleh, fattoush and grape leaves are all vegetarian, and most are vegan.
